When macrophages ingest viruses, bacteria and other foreign material they release the cytokines. These cytokines stimulate liver cells to secrete mannose-binding protein (MBP), a lectin for mannose. Of the five different lectin pathway recognition molecules in human serum, only L-ficolin and collectin 11 activate complement on pneumococci. Human mannose-binding lectin (MBL), the best-known lectin pathway pattern recognition molecule, has no role whatsoever in fighting pneumococci. One more additional pathway of complement activation is termed as lectin pathway. Its main activators are the proteins lectins that specifically bind to the carbohydrate moiety of microbial cells.
