The 1920s saw a rapid adoption and application of Lewis's model of the electron-pair bond in the fields of organic and coordination chemistry. In organic chemistry, this was primarily due to the efforts of the British chemists Arthur Lapworth, Robert Robinson, Thomas Lowry, and Christopher Ingold; while in coordination chemistry, Lewis's bonding model was promoted through the efforts of the American chemist Maurice Huggins and the British chemist Nevil Sidgwick. Carl Wilhelm Scheele (1742́ 1786) was the first to prepare oxygen and realise that air is a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen; he also discovered many important organic and inorganic substances. His fellow chemist and good friend, Torbern Bergman (1735́ 1784), was one of the pioneers in analytical and physical chemistry. History of Organic Chemistry. Organic Chemistry – the chemistry of carbon compounds. Swedish chemist Torbern Bergman (in 1770) was the first to distinguish organic compounds (compounds coming from living things) from inorganic compounds. Organic compounds were believed to have a “vital force”. Organic Chemistry ‣ 18th Century ‣ Organic Compounds obtained from Living Organisms which posses the “vital force” ‣ It was thought that Organic Compounds could not be made or manipulated without the influence of this “vital force” Torbern Bergman 1770 pects of Bergman's numerous contributions to science, in this masterful study Schufle bas described Bergman's life in all its di- mensions, including his work in chemistry, geology, crystallography, physics, biology, and philosophy.
