Test Indications: Carbohydrate-deficient transferrin is a marker for the autosomal recessive disorder previously known as carbohydrate deficient glycoprotein syndrome (CDGS). CDGS is caused by various defects involving the glycosylation of glycoproteins. Carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT), indicating collectively the glycoforms of human transferrin with 0-2 terminal sialic acid residues, namely asialo-, monosialo- and disialotransferrin, is considered the most specific biochemical marker for detecting chronic alcohol abuse and for monitoring abstinence during treatment (1). Description: Alcohol CDT Blood Test. This test measures the level of Carbohydrate-deficient Transferrin (CDT) in the blood.Transferrin is a protein which helps carry iron through the blood. There are various types of Transferrin and CDT is a type commonly found in people who consume significant quantities of alcohol.Elevated CDT levels are typically indicative of heavy alcohol consumption Carbohydrate deficient transferrin (CDT) is used as biomarker of different health problems as, for example, congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG). Transferrin is a substance in the blood that carries iron to the bone marrow, liver, and spleen. When someone drinks too much, it increases certain types of transferrin that are carbohydrate-deficient.

The abnormal transferrin isoform pattern in patients with chronic alcoholism is similar to that observed in congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDGs).

For evaluation of alcohol abuse, order Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin for Alcohol Use (0070412). Transferrin is a glycoprotein. Alcohol inhibits the glycosylation of several glycoproteins, including transferrin. Chronic alcoholism leads to transferrin de 2013-10-22 The Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin (CDT) test measures a particularly sensitive biomarker that tracks heavy alcohol consumption over an extended period of time. Transferrin is a protein which carries iron to parts of the body that need it.

The blood sample taken will be sent off for laboratory testing in order to determine the CDT levels in the sample provided. 1 Definition.

From the Department of Chemical Pathology, The Royal Free Hospital,  Carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) has been reported to be one of the best laboratory markers in serum (S) for detection of alcohol abuse. We have  Carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT, also known as desialotransferrin or asialotransferrin) is a laboratory test used to help detect heavy ethanol consumption  13 Jun 2018 Introduction: Carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) is a known biomarker for chronic alcoholism detection. The clinical use of CDT is varied:  Serum carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT), an 80 kDa glycoprotein, is one of the most commonly employed biomarkers to detect alcohol dependence.

The introduction of a new direct immunoassay for CDT justifies reevaluation of test performance and reexamination of factors affecting test diagnostic sensitivity and specificity. Carbohydrate-deficient transferrin, a sensitive marker of chronic alcohol abuse, is highly influenced by body iron. Carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT), a microheterogeneous form of serum transferrin (Tf), has been proposed as the most reliable marker of chronic alcohol consumption, although unexplained false-positive and -negative results Carbohydrate-deficient Transferrin (CDT), Adult Diasialotransferrin Transferrin Isoforms Carbohydrate deficient transferrin (CDT) testing alone is not recommended for general screening for alcoholism. Analysis of more than 1 biomarker is recommended to avoid misinterpretation of results.
