Historia Numorum  Metapontum or Metapontium was an important city of Magna Graecia, situated on the gulf of Tarentum, between the river Bradanus and the Casuentus (modern  Category includes Amenaea, Copia, Heraclea, Laus, The Lucani, Metapontum, Paestum, Poseidonia, Serdaioi, Sybaris, Thurium, Ursentum, and Velia. Metapontum means: "Between two rivers", the Bradano and the Basento, in the heart of Magna Grecia, a fraction of the municipality of Bernalda, near Matera.

Metapontum (modern Metaponto) lay 30 miles along the coast to the west. This colony was never as important as Tarentum, and was also overshadowed by its westerly neighbour, Sybaris. Despite lacking good harbourage, Metapontum grew rich off the fertility of its land.
